I started Pink Slip a few days after the
company where worked was forced to downsize in 2004. Since I had just received
my own pink slip, I thought the term would make an interesting title for my new
venture. In February of 2005, I was picked up by the Lowell Sun newspaper based
out of Lowell Massachusetts. Originally Pink Slip ran as a daily but with so
many other family obligations and three daughters to raise, the rigors of
keeping up with the strip seven days a week became too much. It seemed wise that
focusing on the Sunday color edition of the comic section was, at least for now,
the best course of action. The editor of the Sun had recommended giving Pink
Slip a local flavor centered in and around the Merrimack Valley. The idea worked
and since then it has enjoyed increasing readership. Over time, Pink Slip has evolved into a “family” strip. I used the members of my own family for the core base of characters. While all the story lines are somewhat based on actual events, my daughters have “strongly” encouraged me to mention that they do not dress as badly as they are portrayed in the panels. In the fall of 2007 I started working on a 2008 calendar. Each month featured a different strip. To my amazement, the printed calendars sold out in two days. At times, people will ask me if a book might be in the works. Presently, I have no plans for a book, but a 2009 calendar is likely. Syndication would also be a very welcome event. I hope you enjoy the strip and please feel free to contact me your comments and suggestions. I’ll do my best to answer everyone’s emails. Thanks, Bob Conroy |
